# Melbourne Blog > Melbourne is best in its neighbourhoods, a half-price tram ride out. Its postcard lanes and long day trips oversell. Fares, penguins, traps, checked October 2026. An Ultimate Travel Guide (BootsnAll Travel Network) for Melbourne, Australia. Updated 2026-10-02. Editorial, no ads, no affiliate links. Full record: https://www.melbourneblog.com/place.json ## Thesis Melbourne lives at the end of a tram line, not in its postcard laneways. Most of what is sold as Melbourne sits in a few hundred metres of the CBD: Hosier Lane, AC/DC Lane, Degraves Street. They are real, and they are crowded: the BootsnAll guide calls Hosier Lane reliably crowded and AC/DC Lane overdone. The city people actually live in is a tram ride out: Vietnamese Victoria Street in Richmond, Lebanese bakeries on Sydney Road in Brunswick, Ethiopian cafes in Footscray, the bars and live music of Fitzroy and Collingwood. That is where the coffee culture and the cheap, good food are. Getting there has rarely been cheaper or easier. Victoria made public transport free in April and May 2026 as petrol prices spiked, then halved fares from 1 June to the end of the year: the full daily fare is $5.70 to go anywhere in the state, $4 at weekends and on public holidays. Since June you can tap a Visa or Mastercard, a phone or a watch on trains and trams, and since late July on buses, at the same fares as myki. The Metro Tunnel opened on 30 November 2025 with five new stations under the city. The CBD trams are free. Budget travellers in 2026 should treat the tram network as the attraction. The weak spots are the ones a 2019 guide oversells. There is still no airport train, and the first stretch of the rail link will not reach Keilor East before 2031, so it is SkyBus at $25.90 or a public bus. The Great Ocean Road and the Phillip Island penguin parade are sold as day trips, but the Twelve Apostles can be five hours from the CBD on the coast road and the parade ends after dark with no bus back. Stay a night on the coast, or watch St Kilda's own penguins come ashore at a free ticketed session a tram ride from the CBD. And pack for weather: Melbourne's reputation for four seasons in a day is earned. ## PlaceScore 7.1/10 (editorial v1) - Value: 5.5/10. Just above the 5 anchor: an average double of $276 and dorms from $21 are fair for an Australian city, half-price fares and free galleries help, but a $25 cheap meal and a $14 pint keep it from good value. - Getting around: 7.5/10. Near the 8 anchor: free CBD trams, bank-card tap-on across trains, trams and buses, and the new Metro Tunnel; the missing airport rail, the lack of a weekly tap cap and car-dependent day trips keep it off 8. - Crowds and timing: 6.5/10. Between 5 and 8: crowds gather in a few lanes and in event weeks (the Australian Open drew 1.36 million in 2026, and hostels book out from January to March), and the weather changes by the hour, but most months work. - Safety and hassle: 7.5/10. Close to the 8 anchor: recorded crime fell 2.9% in the year to June 2026 and scams are rare, though some station corners and late-night strips call for ordinary care, and airport touts pose as rideshare drivers. - Food and drink: 7.5/10. Near the 8 anchor: everyday Vietnamese, Lebanese, Greek and Ethiopian food in the suburbs and the Queen Victoria Market is good and easy to find, but prices are Australian and Lygon Street and the CBD lanes lean touristy. - Indie fit: 8/10. At the 8 anchor: neighbourhoods, markets, free galleries and even wild penguins are a tram fare away; the long day trips are the only place the packaged tour is the easy path. ## Bullshit flags - Claim: "Hosier Lane, AC/DC Lane and Degraves Street are the real Melbourne." Reality: They are the most crowded few hundred metres in the city. The BootsnAll guide calls Hosier Lane reliably crowded and AC/DC Lane overdone; Degraves is now a tourist destination as much as a commuter cut-through. The street art and the cafe culture that matter are in Fitzroy, Collingwood and Abbotsford, and the cheap food is on Victoria Street, Sydney Road and in Footscray. - Claim: "Do the Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles as a day trip from Melbourne." Reality: The road alone is 240km, Torquay to Allansford, and the CBD to the Twelve Apostles can take up to five hours on the coast road, so a day tour is mostly a bus seat. The name was marketing too: there were only ever nine stacks, seven remain, and six are visible from the main viewpoint. Stay a night at Apollo Bay or Port Campbell, or walk a stretch of the 104km Great Ocean Walk. - Claim: "The Phillip Island penguin parade is an easy evening out from Melbourne." Reality: It is a 90-minute drive plus 20 minutes from the bridge, the V/Line coach goes only to Cowes, and there are no return buses to Melbourne after the parade. Cameras and phone cameras are banned after sunset, and in December and January general seating is not guaranteed. General viewing is $34. St Kilda's breakwater colony can be watched for free at booked sessions run by the same Nature Parks. - Claim: "First thing: buy a myki card." Reality: Since June and July 2026 a Visa or Mastercard card, phone or watch can be tapped on trains, trams and buses for the same fares. The catches: Visa and Mastercard only, full fares only, and no weekly cap, so for a week of daily travel a myki 7-day pass ($28.50 at the 2026 half-price rate) can still work out cheaper. - Claim: "Take the airport train into the city." Reality: There is none, and there will not be one for years. The SkyBus City Express to Southern Cross is $25.90 one way ($43.40 return), every 10 to 15 minutes from 4am to 1am, and PTV runs five timetabled public buses from the Terminal 4 hub. Ignore touts in the terminal who claim to be Uber drivers; use the apps' pickup zones. - Claim: "The Free Tram Zone covers the sights." Reality: It covers the CBD and Docklands and stops at the Yarra, so Crown, the Arts Centre and Cooks' Cottage are just outside it. Touch on inside the zone and you are charged a full zone 1+2 fare; touch on only when your trip leaves the zone. ## What has changed - 2025-11-30: The $15 billion Metro Tunnel opened, taking the Sunbury, Cranbourne and Pakenham lines under the CBD through five new stations: Arden, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac on St Kilda Road. The full timetable started on 1 February 2026. Parkville's hospital precinct and St Kilda Road now have trains. For short CBD hops the Swanston Street tram is usually still quicker. - 2026-01-01: The full-fare daily myki cap rose from $11 to $11.40, and travel became free for everyone under 18. The $11.40 figure is the base price once the 2026 half-price fares end; families with teenagers ride free. - 2026-06-01: After free public transport in April and May 2026, introduced as fuel prices rose, Victoria halved fares from 1 June to the end of the year. A day of unlimited travel is $5.70, or $4 at weekends and on public holidays, until 31 December 2026. - 2026-06-21: Contactless tap-and-go reached the tram network, after trains on 7 and 14 June; buses followed on 26 July. Visitors can travel on a Visa or Mastercard card or a phone without buying a myki. Full fare only; concessions follow in 2027. - 2026-09-30: The airport rail link's second stage was split in two, with services to Keilor East expected from 2031 and the final run to the airport left without a confirmed date. Ignore any guide that promises an airport train soon. Plan on SkyBus or a public bus. - 2024-12-07: The rebuilt 450-metre St Kilda Pier officially opened after a $53 million redevelopment. The walk to the breakwater and its penguin colony is open again, with free booked viewing sessions after sunset. ## Costs (AUD, 2026-10) - A hostel dorm bed: 21 to 56 per night - A hotel double room: 206 to 336 per night - A meal at an inexpensive restaurant: 16 to 50 per meal - A cappuccino: 4 to 8 per cup - A pint of local draught beer: 9 to 16.5 per pint - Public transport, all modes (full-fare daily cap): 4 to 5.7 per day - SkyBus airport to Southern Cross: 25.9 one way, adult - Phillip Island Penguin Parade: 34 to 103 per adult ## Sources - [Metropolitan train, tram and bus fares](https://transport.vic.gov.au/tickets-and-payments/fares/metropolitan-train-tram-and-bus-fares) (Transport Victoria, read 2026-10-02) - [Contactless payments](https://transport.vic.gov.au/tickets-and-payments/contactless) (Transport Victoria, read 2026-10-02) - [Extra Month Of Free PT - Then Half-Price Fares For All](https://www.premier.vic.gov.au/extra-month-free-pt-then-half-price-fares-all) (Premier of Victoria, read 2026-10-02) - [New St Kilda Pier Officially Opens Ahead Of Summer](https://www.premier.vic.gov.au/new-st-kilda-pier-officially-opens-ahead-summer) (Premier of Victoria, read 2026-10-02) - [Victoria increases PT fares for 2026](https://www.busnews.com.au/victoria-increases-pt-fares-for-2026/) (Australasian Bus and Coach (busnews.com.au), read 2026-10-02) - [Tap-and-go technology to launch across Melbourne train network after many months of delays](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-06-06/tap-and-go-launching-on-victorian-public-transport/106764592) (ABC News, read 2026-10-02) - [Melbourne commuters now able to use ticketless travel on trams](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-06-21/ticketless-travel-now-on-melbourne-trams/106821294) (ABC News, read 2026-10-02) - [The Melbourne Metro Tunnel opens today.
